Essential Tips to Prepare Your Garden for Winter

Cold weather is coming — is your garden ready? Winter prep doesn’t have to be difficult, but taking a few proactive steps now can protect your plants, improve soil health, and save you time and money in the spring. Here’s what experienced gardeners do to get their landscapes through the winter in top shape.

1. Add Mulch for Insulation

Mulch helps regulate soil temperature and prevents frost heave, where roots are pushed out of the ground by freezing and thawing cycles. Organic mulch like bark, straw, or shredded leaves works best.

2. Cut Back Strategically

Not everything should be cut back. Trim herbaceous perennials that die back completely, but leave ornamental grasses and plants with seed heads for winter interest and wildlife habitat.

3. Protect Evergreens from Burn

Winter sun and wind can dry out evergreen leaves and needles. Apply an anti-desiccant spray or use burlap screens to reduce moisture loss and wind damage.

4. Move Containers Indoors

Terracotta and ceramic pots can crack in freezing temperatures. Bring containers inside or group them in a sheltered area. Empty annual pots and store them upside down.

5. Keep Watering Until It Freezes

Plants still need water up until the ground freezes. Continue watering trees, shrubs, and new plantings during dry fall weather — especially if you’ve had a dry summer.

Winterizing your garden might take a little time, but it pays off in healthier plants, fewer spring surprises, and a more resilient landscape.
